COVID-19

Conclusion:  Humic substances can activate the immune system to inhibit COVID-19

Title: Humic substances as an environmental- friendly organic wastes potentially help as natural anti-virus to inhibit COVID-19

Type of Document: Peer-reviewed journal article

Takeaway: The information gathered in this review indicates that HS can act as an immune modulator, influence the redox state, and potentially affect gut health. HS is shown to decrease pro-inflammatory markers but also activate the immune system to inhibited COVID-19. It is shown to reduce oxidative stress and even induce apoptosis in hepatic cancer lines. HS is shown to also influence the micro-biome and possibly improve gut function. This will help make conclusive statements regarding HS function and its influence on immune-related diseases.

Title: Nanodispersions of Polyelectrolytes Based on Humic Substances: Isolation, Physico-Chemical Characterization and Evaluation of Biological Activity

Type of Document: Peer-reviewed journal article

Takeaway: The results of our research suggest that the chemical structure of natural humus polyelectrolytes is due to the stabilizing interaction of macromolecules with nanoparticles of lyophobic sols–metals with the formation of complexes of the macromolecule-nanoparticle type. The intensity of the fluorescence signal showed that in addition to the organic structure of the non-stoichiometric composition and irregular heterogeneous structure with numerous functional groups, occluded metal nanoparticles are present in the components of humic acids. Polyelectrolytes modified in this way are a unique transport object for medicinal substances. In addition, our studies have demonstrated the possibility of independent binding of naturally branched polyelectrolyte complexes of humic substances with SARS-CoV-2 S-protein in vitro. A study of the EHS effect on the SARS-CoV-2 virus infectious titer in the Vero E6 cell showed the effective against virus both in the virucidal scheme (the SI is 11.90–22.43) and treatment/prevention scheme (the SI is 34.85–57.33). We suppose that the proposed approach will be useful in laboratory and clinical settings for the development of standard quality control protocols, as well as the creation of a promising standardized drug with virucidal treatments for the prevention of coronavirus infection.

Title: Interaction of Drug Candidates with Various SARS-CoV-2 Receptors: An in Silico Study to Combat COVID-19

Type of Document: Peer-reviewed journal article

Takeaway: In this work, molecular docking was used to study (in silico) the interaction of 24 ligands, divided into four groups, with four SARS-CoV-2 receptors, Nsp9 replicase, main protease (Mpro), NSP15 endoribonuclease, and spike protein (S-protein) interacting with human ACE2. The results showed that the antimalarial drug Metaquine and anti-HIV antiretroviral Saquinavir interacted with all the studied receptors, indicating that they are potential candidates for multitarget drugs for COVID-19. Fulvic Acid also showed binding energy equal to −7 kcal/mol with Receptors 2 and 4, two of the SARS-CoV-2 receptors.

Conclusion: Fulvic acid can be a potential inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (coronavirus).

Title: Structure-Function Characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 Proteases and Their Potential Inhibitors from Microbial Sources

Type of Document: Review article

Takeaway:  The SARS-CoV-2 viral proteases, 3-chymotrypsin-like protease (3CLpro) and papain-like cysteine protease (PLpro), have become the promising target to study due to their essential functions in spreading the virus by RNA transcription, translation, protein synthesis, processing and modification, virus replication, and infection of the host. Thus, we have compiled various reported literature in detail on the structures, functions of the SARS-CoV-2 proteases, and potential inhibitors from microbial sources as assistance to other researchers working with COVID-19. Fulvic acid is also a potential inhibitor from microbial sources for SARS-CoV-2 proteases.

Title: A Comprehensive Biological and Physico-Chemical Characterization of Humic and Fulvic Acids Nanoparticles as a Perspective Drug

Type of Document: Journal article

Takeaway: The results of the study of the antiviral activity of extracted humic substances (EHS) and fulvic acid (FA) showed that the study objects in the culture of Vero-E6 cells, in doses non-toxic to cells, suppress the reproduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus both in the study of the virucidal effect and in the study of the antiviral activity according to the therapeutic and prophylactic model scheme of injection. The results obtained suggest that standardized drugs based on humic acids may open up new perspectives in their biomedical application as antiviral drugs.

Conclusion: Fulvic acid-supplemented intranasal iodine drops may be effective in inactivating SARS-CoV-2 virus (coronavirus) and preventing its transmission.

Title: In Vitro Efficacy of “Essential Iodine Drops” Against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)

Type of Document: Journal article

Takeaway: This study evaluated the virucidal activity of the aqueous solution of Iodine-V (a clathrate complex formed by elemental iodine and fulvic acid) as in Essential Iodine Drops (EID) with 200 μg elemental iodine/ml content against SARS-CoV-2 to ascertain whether it is a better alternative to PVP-I. Substantial reductions in log reduction value (LRV) by Iodine-V in EID confirmed the activity of EID against SARS-CoV-2 in vitro, demonstrating that Iodine-V in EID is effective at inactivating the virus in vitro and therefore suggesting its potential application intranasally to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission from known or suspected COVID-19 patients.
